The 2005 Challenge Cup Final produced a modern upset. Leeds Rhinos were one of the top clubs at that time. Their cup pedigree was impressive, having won the cup in 1999 and reached the s-f every year since save 2004, when they won the League by finishing top. Runners up again in the league, they were odds on favourites to beat Hull, due to players in their side like Kevin Sinfield, Rob Burrow and Keith Senior. However, Hull were no slouches, having finished 3rd in 2004 and were still respectably mid table this year. But their cup record at Wembley was appalling. They had won the cup twice, in 1914 and 1982, and both times had been away at Wembley. This time they were at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, but nobody gave them much hope, despite having John Kear as their coach, who had masterminded one of the greatest upsets of all time in 1998 with Sheffield Eagles. But anything can happen in a final and on the day both teams played out of their skins, creating a final to remember in which the lead changed hands several times. So sit back and enjoy a Challenge Cup classic.
Please note that this is from an old recording, so apologies in advance for any glitches there may be. I may also add that at the time I edited out some of the video ref analyst when the game was paused as they checked on try scores due to the time they took debating it. I haven't edited any of the game, and it just makes it run quicker to watch without the video ref delays. I hope you enjoy it.
