Chameleon is the sonic guidepost for my 7th album; it contains the lyric that feels central to the whole project: "I won't hesitate to impersonate every shade of blue / I identify with whatever I blend myself into." The notion of a chameleon also connects to David Bowie in that people often describe his career, riddled with different characters, as being chameleonic. People love to say who I remind them of (human nature to compare, I suppose), and I get Bowie by far the most. It wasn't written with this connection in mind, but it finds extra meaning in the way that a disguise may seem like artifice, but may actually be the clearest indicator of what lies below. Maybe what we project, the character we invent, is the most lucid window into our souls.
Chameleon
Your world is beautiful but unsuitable for the shape I’m in
My body’s withering so I’m slithering out of my old skin
Blood evaporate, bone disintegrate till my soul is bare
I float so easily through the scenery, finally free as air
If I was a chameleon I’d turn into the dark
I would be that feeling when you wake with a start
I’d be that sensation when you fall in a dream
The hallucination you’d have rather not seen
I’ll be the dial tone on your telephone when it’s 2AM
The cold sweat chilling you that’s not willing to let you sleep again
The storm cloud hovering, quickly smothering every match you light
The noise that animates and proliferates shadows in the night
I won’t hesitate to impersonate every shade of blue
I identify with whatever I blend myself into
