Mehboob khan is a unique director as he is virtually at home with every theme from neoreal drama to swashbuckling Robin hood archetypes like AAN ,and in this 1954 drama he is at his intellectual peak, indulging in themes of rape ,ego-mania and chauvinism in a non-traditional mould and narrative .
His characters are bereft of style or artifice and they behave in a manner which is both shocking yet deeply intriguing as they are all stripped of their Bollywood stardom innuendoes to become true actors for this unique drama .
Dilip kumar here is the non traditional indian male lead, who is a respectable and famed lawyer with a beautiful aristocratic fiancee madhubala, and they know each other since childhood in a match made in heaven .
Mehboob introduces a village beauty Nimmi ,who is crude yet posesses a smouldering sex appeal and despite despising her class and her ignorant manners ,dilip is attracted and ends up raping the unfortunate belle .
The dilemma starts as he refuses to acknowledge the crime, and she will not accuse him out of shame and a bizarre love for the man itself; and the complex milieu evolves where choices are a paradigm and the going gets tough,in a scenario which can destroy everyone in the inflammable equation which is already beyond redemption .
Mehboob here has shown his streak of cinematic genius and he has employed the immensely talented beauty with a natural talent ;Madhubala to redeem this precarious predicament in a way that will bewilder any critic or viewer .
While Dilip as the arrogant aristocrat is magnificent and Nimmi as the ebullient and later tragic victim is affective madhubala as the ordinary yet honest woman conquers the conundrum with her spontaneous affect that is a treat to watch on screen as she seems not to be acting but rather living a difficult and impossible choice which has to be made if she has to redeem her conscience and find her own contentment .
The movie is a triumph for director Mehboob and his leading lady Madhubala and they have endowed an ethical enterprise here to cinema that will be unique for eternity with a story that is still impossible to clone .
Naushad has scored shakeel's lyrics with a panache and the song in the temple offered as a supplication to god invoking justice and mercy for humanity is a memorable gift rendered immaculately by Mohammad Rafi .
This is cinema that is precious and very rare in it's superlative quality and though personal in nature it can touch any sensitive human soul ,who is able to respond to ideals of morality and make their heart rejoice in a rapturous devotion to divinity .
I felt enlightened when i was watching this great artistic achievement
