"Murph" Savage impersonates a fallen general in the hope of inspiring his fellow soldiers to bravely fight their way out of a Nazi ensnarement. He might succeed if he can avoid the one soldier who knows his true identity. It's France 1944. Brigadier General Charles Lane, Master Sergeant Murphy Savage (Glenn Ford), and Corporal Chan Derby (Red Buttons) drive up to a group of dis-spirited men. They have been cut off by the German advance. The General orders the men to organize and attempts to set up his headquarter in a bombed out farmhouse. Savage finds Frenchwoman Simone taking a bath. The General is killed. Corporal Terry Sellers suffering from battle fatigue arrives looking to go to the hospital. He mistakes Savage for the general and is convinced to re-enter the fight. Savage decides to impersonate the General to keep up morale and command the defense.

The American tanks in this film are M47 Patton tanks. They were produced post war.
Murph's Thompson sub-machine gun appears to be made up of parts from both an M1928A1 and an M1 Thompson. The gun has a M1928A1 receiver and Cutts Compensator muzzle, but with an M1's "L"-type rear peep sight instead of the M1928A1's adjustable Lyman sight, and an M1's smooth barrel, which lacks the M1928A1's cooling fins.
This film was a success at the box office, earning MGM a profit of $1,095,000 according to studio records.
