Golden Earring ~ Twilight Zone 1982 Classic Rock Purrfection Version
Golden Earring started off in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1961 as The Tornados but changed their name when they discovered a US band already had established a presence there. The new name was a tribute to "Golden Earrings" a single released by Brit group The Hunters. Charter members were 13-year-old George Kooymans and his 15-year-old neighbor, Rinus Gerritse adding Frans Krassenburg on lead vocals and Jaap Eggermont on drums. Eggermont would later become famous as the producer of The Stars On 45 series of hit megamixes in the early 80's.
1965 brought the band to the attention of the record buying public with their song "Please Go" and then a second single "That Day" went to #2 on the Dutch chart. In 1967 they dropped the "The" and the "s" from the name becoming Golden Earring when Barry Hay joined the band as lead vocalist. An early attempt to get the attention of US rock fans was unsuccessful, but they remained wildly popular in Europe.
In 1970, drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk joined the band and they were poised for international fame as the opening acts for Doobie Brothers, Rush, Santana, King Crimson and .38 Special. They became the top billed act after they released the 1973 LP "Moontan" with the raucous "Radar Love" burning up the charts on both sides of the pond. Now, KISS and Aerosmith were opening for them! Unable to maintain the momentum, they kept a relatively low profile until 1982 when they recorded another stone cold smash, "Twilight Zone" which became an international hit and was helped along by the fledgling MTV who put the video in heavy rotation.
Turning their attentions to their European fans, they released music throughout the 80's with Hay and Koomans putting out solo albums. 1991 saw the band with another Dutch hit "Going To The Run" dedicated to a fallen Hell's Angel who was a friend to the band. Their live performances have been carrying them since then and they regularly sold out with the recordings of those concerts being released and selling in the range of half a million copies each.
2003 had them in the US for an album of new material. In 2009 two reunion concerts in the UK brought them back to their former fame in the UK. 50 years together in 2011 got them their own postage stamp and it actually played "Radar Love" when a smartphone app scanned the stamp. It was the very first instance of a postage stamp with music. Now the band has been memorialized in the Hague with a pop exhibition that ran for a year in 2011.
Their last studio album was 2012's "Tits N'Ass" where they introduced new member Johnny Rooymans. "Still Got The Keys to My First Cadillac" was the first single issued and was supported by a video that used young impersonators of the legendary rock outfit.
