From the album "Tomcat Prowl" (1987) Description by Simon Kendall of @dougandtheslugsofficial. "Tomcat Prowl (1988) was the second of our videos shot by Hans Sipma. With the advances in camera technology Hans used a portable camera and we shot pretty much geurilla style - show up, ask permission and shoot on the fly. If memory serves, Doug referred to this video as an ‘alternative beer commercial’ - a tongue-in-cheek variation on the weary worker walking into the sunset with his pals for a frosty beverage. It’s right there in the lyric: ‘Been workin’ like a dog gone crazy, been giving everything I’ve got…pack it in and go to town when the sun goes down…’ but come to think of it, there was no frosty beverage at the end of the rainbow for these weary workers. Damn!
We set up vignettes inserting ourselves into typical work environments in our East Van neighbourhood. Doug lip-synched (approximately) via a sony walkman as he appeared in a fish-gutting plant, a chicken processing operation and a short-order kitchen. The Slugs are scattered throughout the scenes in appropriate outfits. Doug and I borrowed coveralls and appeared in front of a molten metal pour at the late lamented Terminal City Iron Works foundry just a few blocks from my house. I loved how the various locations accepted us showing up and jumping into their work day.
BTW – in Vancouver you can still see manhole covers and sidewalk grates with the ‘TC’ logo from the foundry where we shot this video. I missed the climactic rooftop scene for reasons explained below, but returned in time for the live footage shot at Steel Monkey.
For those wanting a deeper dive, here’s a link to Hans’ description of the shoot from our website. Also, I lifted this quote from yours truly about the worst-kept-secret stand-in…
https://dougandtheslugs.ca/tomcat-prowl-music-video-by-hans-sipma/
My secret is now out: That sexy guy mashing the keys & dancing on the rooftop? It ain’t me – it’s my good friend Leif Arntzen. I was AWL for the rooftop shot. I’d been invited to be best man at my best man’s wedding in the Kootenays, and couldn’t turn him down. Doug was irritated as usual about personal life (babies, marriages, funerals) interfering with his plans for the band, but I nominated my friend Leif as a stand-in. He’s a good friend and fine musician – he played trumpet on Doug’s solo album, and had put a horn section together for our gig at the Bottom Line in NYC the previous year. Leif was back in Vancouver and happy to oblige. I loaned him my stage clothes (shades, underwear & shoes were his own) and the guys offered him expert choreographic advice:
‘… to look like Si just stick your ass way out and dance like an idiot...’
Suffice it to say Leif did a stellar job. I couldn’t believe anyone was fooled, but for years people came up and complimented me ‘…you were so great in the Tomcat video!!’ I hated to disappoint them…
I have to give the Slug Oscar to Leif for his ridiculously OTT stand-in performance. Honourable mention to John Burton (who co-wrote the song) for his cameo as a frustrated short-order cook."
