Ukrainian peacekeepers from the U.N. designated "safe haven" of
Gorazde in eastern Bosnia, arrived in Serbia on Thursday (24/8).
Their departure was delayed in part because of a Bosnian Serb
demand that they could only leave if they took with them all the
equipment they had originally brought into Gorazde. The Ukrainians
could not fulfill this demand as most of their vehicles and
weapons had been stolen by Serbian separatists and Bosnian
government troops. A Russian convoy left Belgrade to pick up the
Ukrainians who are currently at a checkpoint about 25 kilometres
away at the outskirts of the Serbian capital, Belgrade. British
troops and equipment will also be withdrawn from Gorazde by
mid-September, a move which will be seen as a huge blow to the
credibility of the U.N. Last month, the U.N. said they would
defend Gorazde after two other " safe areas" Srebrenica and Zepa,
fell to rebel Serbs.
