O Blessed Virgin,
Descend by a star
In a yonder gorge in
A roadless part.
Spill Luna's hair out,
Like liniment,
On a rustic manger
Of my home land.
Nighttime is long-drawn.
Your son's therein.
Drop dawn on top of
Ultramarine.
Deck hills and dales in
Your smile of bliss,
Hang up by a cradle
The sun on twigs.
And, praising daybreak,
May there arise
The holly babe of
Earth's paradise.
***
Smelling of sweat, sooty parcel of earth,
How not to love you, how not to nurse?
Out by the lake, on a blue brushwood mole,
Grace of the evening makes up to the soul.
Tents, like gray sackings, are scattered about;
Sloshing, by reeds, is being tonelessly lulled.
Tripods are gored by the red of the fires,
Brushwood is wrinkling the moon's eaves of white.
Quietly squatting, in spots of the dawn,
Mowers are glued to the tales of the old.
Somewhere away, on a far river turn
Fishers are singing a somnolent song.
Tin-like is bleary gloss of the plain...
Sorrowful song, you're an old Russian pain.
