Sri Gaura Purnima is a Gaudiya festival that is celebrated in March, to commemorate the transcendental appearance of Lord Sri Krishna in the form Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, in Navadwipa, India, on this planet more than 500 years ago, to propagate the yuga dharma of Kali-yuga. Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Great Apostle of love of God and the father of the congregational chanting of the Holy Name of the Lord, advented Himself at Sridhama Mayapura, a quarter in the city of Navadvipa in Bengal, on the Phalguni Poornima evening in the year 1407 Sakabda (corresponding to February 1486 by the Christian calendar). His father was Sri Jagannatha Mishra, a learned brahmana from the district of Sylhet. His mother was Srimati Sachidevi, a daughter of Srila Nilambara Chakravarti, the great, learned scholar of Navadvipa. Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu exhibited His transcendental activities for forty-eight years and then withdrew His mortal form in the year 1455 Sakabda at Puri, India.
Gaura means “Golden" and Purnima means "Full Moon”. This festival is celebrated as part of Sri Navadvipa-mandala Parikrama. The name signifies that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu took birth as a golden Avatar at the time of full moon and He blessed everyone with the moonlike rays of His teachings. Lord Caitanya is non-different from Lord Sri Krishna appearing as His own devotee. He spread the congregation chanting of the Holy Name and taught that one can gain enlightenment by chanting "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare."
Lord Chaitanya moved the masses by performing the congregational chanting of the Holy Name. The intelligent people of this fallen age take to this method of worship of the Supreme Lord.
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the most merciful incarnation of the Lord, is also referred to as Gauranga because of His golden complexion. He appeared in the beginning of Kali-yuga to start the congregation chanting of holy names. The Maha-Mantra that we chant today was started by Him and it was by His mercy that the fallen souls got the opportunity to relish the transcendental bliss. When He came, He was accompanied by His associates from the spiritual world such as Lord Balaram in the form of Lord Nityananda. There are many citations, evidences and references in Vedic scriptures of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s appearance in the age of Kali-yuga. The great saints and sages of India have confirmed Him to be Lord Krishna’s incarnation with matching information about His place, time and lineage of birth. Anyone who prays to Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu will surely attain Lord Krishna’s abode. His life is full of beautiful past-times that can be read from Sri Chaitanya Caritamrta.
His followers spend this festival fasting and chanting congregationally. Commonly on Sri Gaura Poornima the utsava Deities of Nitai Gauranga (Lord Nityananda and Lord Chaitanya) receive a very grand abhisheka from 108 kalashas. They then receive a wonderful offering of 108 dishes. The devotees enact Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s pastimes relating to preaching Lord Sri Krishna’s message to the masses. A Shayana arati is performed, to the accompaniment of a special song glorifying Lord Chaitanya. The Deities are then taken in a pallakki with the singing of the most ecstatic kirtanas. The festival ends at moonrise with an anukalpa feast (made from non-grain ingredients) or Ekadasi Krishna prasad enjoyed by all.
This year we are celebrating the 529th anniversary of His appearance on March 05, 2015. In Mayapur it is the biggest festival throughout whole year. On the eve of Gaura-Purnima, an adhivasa ceremony is performed by the devotees to purify ourselves and get ready to worship and serve the Lord the next day.
The morning Srimad-Bhagavatam class is given by leaders of ISKCON. During the day, devotees go to the River Ganga and take bath to purify themselves. A grand abhiseka of Gauranga Mahaprabhu is done in the evening. The ecstatic ...
