'Death isn't scary - it's just like going to sleep': Paul Daniels' thoughts on dying revealed three years before he was diagnosed with incurable brain tumour.
Veteran star Paul Daniels once claimed death wasn't scary because it was 'just like going to sleep'.
The magician and entertainer's family announced earlier that he had been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour but he has spoken openly about dying in the past.
Speaking to The Guardian three years ago, he said: 'Death isn't scary - it's just like going to sleep. It doesn't bother me because when your time's up, your time's up. Some people can't take that.'
The performer, 77, is known for his popular BBC magic shows between the 1970s-90s.
A statement on Mr Daniel's official website released today said: 'We can confirm that one of our greatest magicians and entertainers of all times, Paul Daniels, has sadly been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour.
'On behalf of Paul, Debbie and their families, we thank you for your kind concerns and support at this sad time and ask that their privacy continues to be respected.
'There will no further comments at this time.'
The Paul Daniels Magic Show was shown on the BBC between 1979-1994 with Mrs McGee performing as an assistant.
The couple married in 1988 after they met when the Royal Ballet-trained dancer auditioned as a dancer on Daniels' show.
She has tweeted a link to the statement on her husband's website with the words: 'With sadness.'
The 77-year-old, whose real name is Newton Edward Daniels, earlier found success with a Sunday night show on ITV.
He has also performed for the Royal Family and foreign dignitaries and stars.
Speaking in an earlier interview as reported by the Guardian about his childhood, he said: 'A hot, wet childhood holiday got me into magic.
'We couldn't go out because of the bad weather and one of the books in the place we were staying in had magic tricks in it that you could do yourself.
'I was very shy but found out I could go to school and do some tricks. The fact that people didn't know how the hell I was doing it made me continue doing it.'
