Nonnus, a native of the city of Panopolis in Upper Egypt, composed his extraordinary expansive epic on the life of Dionysos in the 5th century CE. The strange world of the poem, sprouting countless offshoots, blending genres, interweaving innovation and encyclopedic knowledge of tradition, shifts between enchanting, bewildering, and discomforting.
The monumental task of creating a verse translation of Nonnus’ epic is a radical modern poetic experiment, undertaken by a group of forty-two translators, resulting in a constellation of diverse approaches. The poet-translators who will participate in the conversations are Stanley Lombardo, Rachel Hadas, Gordon Braden, Adrienne Atkins, and Rob Turner; the panel is moderated by Natasha Bershadsky.
