mature love in a mellow mystery
The human behavioural pattern is the most fascinating observation itself and the amorous and sexual attitudes possibly conclude this perspective with a flourish ,as it will be absolutely impossible to be impassive for any mortal to show complete indifference to the erotic adventures of fellow men .
In this rather grand design the book written by Vincezy in an autobiographical form is rather a formidable event and the cinematic adaptation by Kaczender in 1977 is as close to the spirit of the book as a screen version can ever get without usurping every text from the print itself .
The very under-rated American actor TOM BERENGER played the Hungarian man, who is self-relating his bizarre sexploitations which actually become quite meaningful when examined and analysed as he is obsessed and fixated with older women without being officially designated as a gigolo ,as he genuinely is both attracted and emotionally enamoured by the mature delights and experiences of his paramours .
The movie covers seven of his erotic escapades from Nazi Germany where he is seduced as a teen-ager by a prostitute to his final ambiguous encounter with a younger woman as an immigrant teacher in Canada .
The middle part is most intriguing and uniquely provocative where he meets the other five exquisite women in detailed characterization and superbly orchestrated performances by the extremely talented feminine charms of KAREN BLACK,SUSAN STRASBOURG AND MARGARET LIGHTHOUSE.
The location is BUDAPEST and the androgynous metropolis and the political turmoil along with the strife between Communism and Capitalism, as opposite ideologies enrich the multi faceted script as well as make the women into individuals than sex objects , who have a mind of their own that makes their physical appetites akin to an intellectual craving ,which i have only seen rarely if at all in any screen venture .
The psychology of the male ego and it's quest for fantasy and curiosity is harmonised by the feminine thirst for an emotional conquest to justify their own ego ,which makes this a very unique movie in history as the theme has never been realised in such richly elaborate graphic visuals with a penchant for exploring the mystery of human desire .
The movie succeeds in bringing the two chief aspects of sexual behaviour as lust and love into focus and then goes further to describe how it can affect human experiences as enhanced by the passage of time and emotional maturity exploited by experience .
The characters are caught in every mood and light from strip teases to political entendres and cheating on the other protagonists while being caught red-handed which sustains this erotica with a sharp dark humour almost akin to a black sex comedy but the drama is enhanced by the lighter touches and the acting shines with the softly mellow light used cherishingly by the director to view his diversely deranged but realistic characters .
The ending of course will either enchant you or leave you gasping for much more ,but it is Berenger ,Black and Lighthouse who will forever be etched in your memory once you see this passionately explicit adoration of the fair sex .
Berenger unfortunately was wasted after this in character roles in action movies like Platoon and Gettysburg, but he illustrates here that Hollywood lost an intelligent natural leading man with talent ,when they relegated him to the more formulaic flicks but than that is hardly surprising as this cadre of a simple but touching psychological explorations are rare in tinsel town and it is rather fortunate that this was produced in the first place, with an authentic aura from Berlin to Budapest and with the talented duo of Berenger and Black too.

This movie could only have been made by an European dictator who had insight in European culture and society about sexual entanglement and encounters and relationships and the hardships and heartbreak of casual sex itself not the result of a drunken stupor but actually genuine attraction itself and it delineates how the romance races differ in their sexual perceptions from anglo Saxon hypocrisy and mendacity, no wonder it has never been appreciated in USA or Uk but it’s exactly the truth in real life sex which is for both pleasure and emotional satisfaction rather than a drunken tirade late at night to be forgotten the day after following in contrition and self loathing!
The evolution of a man who can please a woman And himself at same time is a very mature and crucial topic!
