The game takes place in the year 1992, during the heyday of the crime in the metropolitan areas of California. The player controls the main character Carl Johnson (Engl. Carl Johnson), nicknamed b-Jay (Engl. CJ), African American at the age of about 25 years. C-Jay returned to Los Santos after five years of living in Liberty City. He left Los Santos in 1987 because of the death of his younger brother, Brian, in which his older brother Sean vinyl named [[Sweet Johnson]] (Engl. Sweet).
