Saving a life - In the field treatment of elephant targeted by poachers
On 25th February 2014, one of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's (DSWT) Super Cub Pilots spotted an injured elephant in Tsavo National Park. A call was raised to the DSWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Veterinary Unit and three Kenya Wildlife Service Vets rapidly responded. They provided life saving treatment to this bull elephant, who'd been targeted by poison arrow poachers, seeking to end his life so that they might take his ivory.
The efforts of the KWS and our ground and air teams mean this bull elephant has a second chance. We are especially thankful to Vier Pfoten for their funding of the Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit for the last 11 years and to all those that support our efforts to save Kenya's elephants and wild species.
This elephant was fortunate, in that he was spotted and ground teams were able to respond, tragically, many other elephants targeted for their ivory lose their lives everyday.
