Movie Guide: The Golden Years - 1968 – The Thomas Crown Affair
Recommendation: Twelfth and second recommendation of the third part of this excellent year, 1968.And as we said in the previous recommendation, we were going to take advantage of this part, to pay a well-deserved tribute to a brilliant star who, for being tough, lit up the night of the 60s, his name Steve McQueen and this second film and with which we are going to close this brief cycle, «The Thomas Crown Affair«
A suspense thriller, which abuses the split screen so fashionable for that time that, we observe in the, this year, already recommended «The Boston Strangler» and which delves into the purest white-collar thief style and that, despite having been parodied just 4 years earlier, in the iconic «Pink Panther» (1964), our tough hero, Steve McQueen, takes up the theme, giving us a suspense film mixed with an underground «Fifty Shades of Grey» with the bewitching Faye Dunaway from (2015) and the purest detective style, which she offered us in our previous recommended film «Bullitt«, but from the thief’s point of view.
And for this, I propose a game, to compare it with a subsequent sequel to it, which in 1999 and with the title «The Thomas Crown Affair«, starred: Pierce Brosnan as elegant Thomas Crown and Rene Russo as plays the beautiful and intelligent Catherine Olds Banning. Do we compare them?
And so, with this «The Thomas Crown Affair» we are going to find an American suspense film, produced by United Artists and which, with a budget of $4.3M, obtained a collection of $14M.
Its director is the Canadian director, producer and actor, Norman Jewison, and director of a piece of hits such as: the great winner of the previous year, 1967, with the Oscar and Golden Globe for best film for our already recommended «In the Heat of the Night«, «Fiddler on the Roof» (1971) Golden Globe for Best Picture, «Jesus Christ Superstar» (1973), or «Moonstruck» (1987)
And such great films as: «The Cincinnati Kid» (1966) and film with which he had the first intervention with our protagonist of the day Steve McQueen. «The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming» (1967) for which he earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Picture. His two Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for the aforementioned «In the Heat of the Night» (1967), «Fiddler on the Roof» (1971) and, finally, the Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for best film for «A Soldier’s Story» (1984) and finally, «Agnes of God» (1985) «Total nothing«
So we find ourselves with one of the most influential directors of 3 decades, the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. As I indicated «Total nothing«
And so, we leave the production section, to focus on its interpretative part, and in this case and by proximity, with respect to its main interpreter, we are going to repeat what we said in the movie «Bullitt» of this common «prota«. So I’ll leave you with it by saying that, delving into the good old Steve McQueen we are going to find a brilliant and meteoric star of the 60s, becoming the highest paid actor in the world.
If we don’t review the titles of this great actor born in Beech Grove, Indiana and who, his acting beginnings and for which he jumped from anonymity, was in the TV series «Wanted: Dead or Alive» (1958-1961) becoming very popular in USA.
But without a doubt, if a film gave him the first and definitive push, it was the western and by us already recommended «The Magnificent Seven» (1960). Film by director John Sturges, and co-starring with actor Yul Brynner.
To then reach him what would be the accolade that elevated him as a star, and it was the one directed by the aforementioned director John Sturges, together with James Garner, who were both pushed to stardom, with this choral prison film and located in the setting of the war genre called «The Great Escape» (1963)
Next, in the same year, we have his first Golden Globe nomination for best actor for the romantic drama «Love with the Proper Stranger«. And above all, the Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for the war film and already recommended by us «The Sand Pebbles» (1966).
And now, finally, we enter our current and recommended 1968, and in which, with the film that we first came across was «Bullitt«, we are going to find ourselves in this «The Thomas Crown Affair» with a Successful businessman who, precisely because of this, finds himself bored with the «things» that life can offer him, looking for adrenaline and experiences that can compensate him for the neglect that success already offers him.
For this, the attractive Steve McQueen, meddles in «the dark side of the force«, becoming the mastermind of a white collar robbery. To then run into her partner today, Faye Dunaway, and that, being a private detective, her goal is to discover and unmask the tough and boring, today, Steve McQueen.
Turning the tape into a suspense film mixing an underground «Fifty Shades of Grey» with the bewitching Faye Dunaway (recreate yourself in the game of chess) and turning the action into the purest detective style, but this time, from the point thief’s view.
So, having already mentioned and now set our focus on the bewitching and intelligent American actress, we are going to pay due tribute to one of the actresses considered one of the greatest of her generation and who, apart from being nominated Many times, he won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for «Network» (1976). His name is Faye Dunaway and, being the partner today, let’s go through his career to discover the magnitude of the character.

And finally, the soundtrack of «The Thomas Crown Affair » is the work of the French composer born in Paris, Michel Legrand and who, for this soundtrack, was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Soundtrack.
