Music and Film Scores - Adventure land - Desert Air - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Comment: If a week ago, in this «A Journey Through History» I opened a new folder of selections that I have called «Desert Air», the logical thing to do is to continue with it. So, yes, in the first selection, leaving the sheets of that great continent called «Africa», we headed further northeast, to a place where the line of the desert marked its border and three proud pyramids rose to the sky. . Today, after bumping into those historical figures for whom, in their honor, those mammoth and funerary architectural works were built, which we painted, in «Land of the Pharaohs», thousands of years later, on this same land and in a Let’s say more colonial times, we find their remains in what could be considered Human History. And for this, some new characters appear who go out of their way to find them and we are going to focus on them, because we are going to focus on the two most famous archaeologists that the world of cinema has ever located in the lands of Egypt. Well, who does not know a certain Dr. Henry Jones, better known as «Indiana Jones», or a certain «Rick O’Connell» a member of the French Foreign Legion who, accompanied by a librarian named Evelyn Carnahan, inadvertently found himself they are going to run into a whole «Mummy». For this reason, although accompanied by the soundtracks of other films, our highlights of the day will focus on three films with their respective composers and they are:
1981 – John Williams – Raiders of the Lost Ark
1999 – Jerry Goldsmith – The Mummy
2001- Alan Silvestri – The Return of the Mummy
What have we hit? And without further ado, let’s begin, but not before, reminding you that we are located in this enigmatic land where the blazing sun and the sandy dunes surround us on all sides, let us, then, be lulled by the music of those warm lands, without it being an obstacle, the rumble of their great kettledrums.
And so, as is logical, we will start at the beginning and find ourselves with the New York maestro John Williams who, in 1981, gave us this extremely famous soundtrack from which, just by listening to the first gloomy chords, we will recognize it and, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score. For this reason, and for the importance that this score still imposes, we will listen to no more and no less than 6 songs, and which I have tried to keep, according to the chronological order of the film: «El ídolo», «Marion @ El Cairo», «The Map Chamber and the Little Gun», «Song of Love», «The Lost Ark is Opened» and «Marion @ End Titles»
And so, having finished our first course, after 17 minutes of selection, I am going to offer you a curious appetizer, which occurred 7 years after this lost ark, and that is that in 1988, a composer appeared who, following in the wake of our next dish strong, with this irreverent theme, since no one could have thought that such a compositional sound could be obtained from a cartoon film, with it he wrote his letter of introduction to be our third great composer today. The name of him Alan Silvestri and the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Let’s listen, then, to a fragment of his suite to verify his excellent orchestration.
And having listened to this impas, we focused on our second course and it is that, neither more nor less than 11 years later, in 1999 and, as I was saying, he comes to us, a soldier from the foreign legion who, together with a nerdy The librarian, on the fly, takes us to a place called Hamunaptra and where we will come across a character from the ancient world, dressed in many gauze for the occasion. What was the movie called? «The Mummy» and the composer of its soundtrack: of course, the great Jerry Goldsmith, since the New York composer John Williams is involved, as the Californian composer will not seem like. And so from this, pharaonic, «The Mummy» we are going to listen to 5 songs, and they are: «Pharaon», «Gardens of the Nile», «La huida» «En camel» and «Suite @ Final titles» Magnificent composition, right?
But let’s continue, and so, without further delay, and after 38 minutes of selection, we focus on our third course, and with our third composer Alan Silvestri and, after the great Jerry Goldsmith and his «The Mummy» two years later, In 2001, the composer among others, «Who Framed Roger Rabbit?», «Back to the Future», «Predator 2» or «Judge Dred» took over from the Californian composer, and recreating the same characters, resumed the thread of his composition, and giving it a twist, he gave us a magnificent soundtrack in which he subtly paints us an evolution of this tiresome mummy in: «The return of the mummy» and from which we are going to listen to another 6 songs: «On the sand», «The return of the Mummy», «Next to an Oasis», «Evy’s memories», «Final combat» and «Medjai Commandos» What an excellent selection, isn’t it?
And, thus, we are reaching the end of our selection to, after 51 minutes, attack our fourth and last block, and it is that after these 3 great composers, we are going to offer you a couple of BSo’s, which if we did not have to locate them in Egypt, due to their sonority, well we could locate them here. The first, from 2012, is a science fiction film, by the composer Michael Giacchino, about a certain «John Carter» who, being terrestrial, we are going to place him in another world, and from which we are going to listen to his «Suite» And the second, a 2014 film, «The Monkey King» composed by Christopher Young that, due to its rhythmic composition, we could also place it here, next to the three pyramids, and from which we are going to listen to 2 songs: «Suite» and «Chorus «
And with this we have reached the end of our selection, this time approximately 1 hour long, leaving you the link so you can listen to it, under his cover, or in the box that we have created for his play-list. Therefore, all based on three great composers, and that we must now enjoy, but not before, asking you the dutiful question in the form of a survey. Which of the three did you like the most?
