Music and Film Scores - A era Colonial - Adventure Land - The last days of Edén - Out of Africa
Comment: If a few weeks ago, we began a journey down the coastline and arriving in South America to penetrate this «Land of adventures» that are «The last days of Eden», today, we will cross the entire Atlantic Ocean to change, even , of the continent and, by the hand of the great English composer John Barry, he will achieve that, dreamily, we come to visualize the great savannahs of the African continent.
Africa, a land of great extensions and, therefore, of deep sonority that serves us perfectly, as a tribute to introduce you, practically in a monologue, to the English composer who, regardless of his cinematographic location, will be able to envelop you all, from an exaggeratedly romantic point. And it is that, according to my point of view, nobody like him, has captured the immensity of these landscapes, where the metal horns sing to the wind, so that from a bird’s eye view, we can fly over those great expanses of grass called savannah. And for this, I propose that we focus, as nerve centers, on three films that represented an era and that, of course, were justly awarded 3 Oscars for best soundtracks in their respective years. Which are: «Born Free», «Out of Africa» and as I was saying, forgetting about its location, because what we have awarded in this folder is the sound setting large expanses, we will look at «Dancing with Wolves». In addition, we will pay the due tribute that the composition deserves, having left it, for my part, outside the music of the West. Total, you will see what piece of selection we get. Finally, and as is customary for me, I will make you vote for the musical composition that you liked the most and that is best associated with the name of our play-list.
Let’s start then, and curiously, we will start this playlist with a composer who, by the way, is not our honoree, but who will serve us perfectly to set ourselves in those African savannahs. So in 1962 and by the hand of Henry Mancini with the film «Hatari» we will walk with the trunk of three little elephants through an entire African camp.
You’re already in the mood, yes? Well, with everyone in agreement, we will only have to advance 4 years to, in 1966, hit us face to face with the first hit by the British composer, and it is that as soon as he arrived and he already won his first Oscar. What movie are we talking about? Well, «Born Free» and from which we will listen to a very extensive «Suite» Enjoy it.
And so, after this unencumbered composition, which in its sympathetic rhythms has tones similar to Henry Mancini’s Hatari, five years later, in 1971, we are going to find ourselves, as I warned you, with a John Barry, totally romantic and, precursor of what was to come, and that is that in the same year, he offered us two pieces of compositions «The last valley» and «Walkabout», let us enjoy his captured musical melancholy.
And after these musical wonders, we jump to the 80’s, but without leaving the romanticism, so that in 1981, we will start listening to his «Body Heat».
And so, leaving aside the well-worn music of the heart, suddenly we boarded a plane and in 1983, traveling through the soundtrack of the film «High Road to China» and from which we will listen to his long «High road». So, the time has come, and we are in a position to reach a new Oscar in 1985, mixing the African adventure and an extremely romantic atmosphere, and that is that we have arrived at the film from which our selection bears his name, we have arrived to «Out of Africa» and from which we will listen, nothing more and nothing less than 6 songs. Hello, sit comfortably and enjoy: «Alone on the Farm» «Flying over Africa», «I’m bettr at hello», «Siyawe», «I had a farm in Africa» and «You are Karen»
How wonderful, right? Well, let’s continue, and in the spirit of continuity, we will attack the second part of our selection. What’s going well?
And so, as I told you, forgetting its location and following the sound depicted in «Out of Africa» we fully entered the 90s, running into in the same year 1990 with a new hit, and a new Oscar for the good John Barry, and it is that placing ourselves in the prairies of the far west, we have reached «Dancing with wolves» and from which we will listen to another magnificent selection of 5 songs «Dancing with wolves», «Socks», «Journey to fort Sedgewik», «The Jhon Dumbar theme» and «Two Socks»
And after these two pieces of soundtracks «Out of Africa» and «Dancing with Wolves», we are going to get rid of so much loudness, and since we have entered the 90s, we are going to let other composers who , with their eyes also set on the African continent, they also wanted to paint it with their music. So in the same year, 1990, we will meet the New York composer Michel Small and his soundtrack for «Mountains of the Moon»
And after these drawn mountains, we channeled the final part of our selection, playing as we did with «Dancing with Wolves» to misplace it, and situate ourselves again in the American western, running into a piece of composition, which grates the paroxysm of the music romantic, and it is that in 1995 and by the hands of the British composer David Arnold I create this marvelous symphonic score for «Last of the Dogmen» I recommend that you enjoy it, because it is a delight.
And so we have come to the end, with again, our honored and great English composer John Barry who, in 1995, left us this «The Scarlet Letter». Accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith to return to the African savannah, finish this great selection, in 1996 with his «The Ghost and the Darkness»
And so, we have reached the end of this play-list which, as I promised you, is a selection past, right? and, neither more nor less than 80 minutes long and which you can access by clicking below its cover or on the link of its play-list. Enjoy it.
