Musika and Film Scores - A Colonial era - The Old West - Spagueti-western
Comment: Eighth installment, and in what is going to be the last on BSO’s of Western movies. So, if you remember, in the previous one, «Valverde», we derived the genre from the West to a more southern music, with certainly Latin connotations. Well, in this and what will be the last, we are going to highlight this aspect, well, what composer is more Latino than an Italian to end this series of play-lists that we have dedicated to the music of the West for so long . Still can’t figure out who it is? Of course, by the great Ennio Morricone, and his father compositionally speaking of the music of the «Spaghetti-western» and, due to his special idiosyncrasy, he deserves a monologue in a folder made exclusively for him.
And for this, we are going to divide the selection into two clearly differentiated parts. The first, circumscribed in the music that derives from the name of the selection itself, the western. But that in the first part, because in the second part, I am going to focus this selection on the tenderness and melancholy of the last selected compositions. Therefore, the latter are a tribute to this incomparable composer who, unfortunately, left us on 7-6-2020, that is, almost a year ago. Shall we start?
Yes. To do this, let’s glimpse the town, from the top of the hill, placing the group of houses that swirl around it, down there, as if it were an oasis in the stony desert. For, riding along the yellowish path of the road, enter this, quenching thirst, in the Salom bar. Of course, a liquid amber that is kept in a glass of whiskey.
Will they be waiting for us? – we say to ourselves while carelessly caressing the butt of our colt.
And so we will begin this first part, in the 60s where the composer together with the director Sergio Leone, made a series of films that today are known as the dollar trilogy. And it is that it all began in 1964, with the first installment of the series called «For a handful of pains» and, with a Clint Eastwood who throughout the saga would wear a poncho more threadbare than a serón. So, from this film I am going to offer you two songs: «Los títulos» and his «Degüello»
From this, we will travel to 1965, to «Death had a price» interpreted in addition to the everlasting Clint Eastwood by Lee Van Cleef. Iconic film that, by the way, according to multiple surveys, is the film most loved by the Spanish. We are going to listen to his «Titles» from her, «El carillon» to end his «Degüello»
And since all good things have an end, we will end the trilogy by going to 1966 with «The Good, the Bad and the Ugly» interpreted in addition to the two previous monsters, by Eli Wallach who plays an excellent role as «Tuco». I’m going to offer, the «Titles» and «In the cemetery» What memories, huh?
And after the trilogy, we continue in the West to go to 1968 to get «Until His Time» again, a spaghetti-western directed by Sergio Leone, and played by Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda that we are going to hear about and it is not there. nothing: «Banjo», «Cabalgando», «Adagio», his «Degüello» and a final «Suite».
And, thus, we immerse ourselves in the 70s, with two films. The first in 1970, reminiscent of the dollar trilogy, in collaboration, of course, with Clint Eastwood. What movie are we talking about? «Of two mules and a woman» and from which we will listen to its sublime «Titles» Pay attention to its music. To what would you swear that the mule’s braying is heard? Great, right? And finally, we will finish in 1971 with the suite from the film «Duck down damn» one more example, and the last, of a clear spaghetti-western.
And once the first part is finished, as I promised, we will begin the second, with a radically different tone, sweeter and more melancholic that, going to 1984, will make us enjoy a sublime and extensive suite from the film «Once upon a time America» and for the which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score. Finally, we will travel to 1988, where we will enjoy a section of his «Cinema Paraíso»
And so, we have reached the end of this highly varied selection, with which, during 8 episodes, I have reeled off the best of Western music. So what better ending than with a composer with capital letters and who held our country, Spain, in such esteem and affection. Magnificent playlist! one hour long, and which, now, all that remains is to enjoy.
