Comment: Sixth installment of Western movie soundtracks, this time called «Maverick» And, throwing the rest in the spit, we advance the decade and, we are going to cover the rest that we have left, the 70s, 80s and 90s, taking us to an hour and a half playlist of great Western music. From «Maverick» I can anticipate that it will be, apart from a familiar sound, more festive. Well, continuing with the selection of Western that we did the week before, and by the name of the selection, you can guess that we are going to wink at the world of the small screen. To do this, we will listen to the BSO of iconic television series. Undoubtedly, a good incentive to recall those hidden memories that, after listening to just a few notes, will make our hearts melt.
Thus, with «Maverick» presented, let’s break it down, to initially participate and, as is logical, that a multitude of composers will appear in it, since in this selection, there is no composer that predominates over the others. Although, to begin with, and breaking the rules a bit, we will begin, of course, with the great maestro Jerry Goldsmith who in 1968 with the soundtrack of «Bandolero» would give us a preview of what was to come, because in 1973 he gave us this very long Suite of his «The little fugitive». And, after it, and as a general rule, we travel to the year 1974 and, from the hands of the composer David Rose, we will listen to the first soundtrack of an iconic television series and that, surely, many of you, with just the first chords, will know , «The Prairie House»
Next decade and, linking one with the other, we will jump to the 80s. Thus, in this one, we will begin in 1984 with Randy Newman and his Oscar nominee «The Best». And now, without delay, we fully enter the sound of the best western of the 80s, and of course, by the hand of the British composer Bruce Broughton who, in 1985, created this magnificent typically American soundtrack for «Silverado» nominated for the Oscar for the best soundtrack, and from which we will listen to 2 songs: «Silverado» and a long «Suite»
And after this orchestral Suite, we relax a bit to come face to face with the magnificent year, the year 1989, and in which we will find ourselves with, neither more nor less than, 3 composers. Starting with the American Basil Poledouris and his, fragile, «Lonely Dove». To then move on to a Frenchman named Georges Delerue who composed a marvel for «Steel Magnolias» And we will close this prolific year 1989, with another composer, this time German, a certain Hans Zimmer, with whom, lowering decibels, we will travel in «Driving Miss Daisy»
And finally, leaving behind this great year, we immerse ourselves in our last decade, the 90s, and in 1990 and again, at the hands of the great Basil Poledouris, traveling to his particular West and, although this time less fragile, meeting his » An aimless cowboy» After this, we pick up the pace to, changing genres, transmute ourselves to the world of animation, and with a little mouse dressed as a western, move to the year 1991 and by the hand of the American James Horner, mixing his sensitive sound and the of a fiery Aaron Copland, offers us this «Fievel travels to the West» and, of which we will listen to two songs: A long Suite of 8 minutes duration and the other much shorter.
Another jump and, this time, we repeat with the British composer Bruce Broughton who, once again, with his typically American energetic sound set in those bombastic horns, in 1993 brings us closer to the iconic «Tombstone» and, of which we will listen to 2 songs : «Tombstone» and his «Suite»
And so, we channel the final part of the prolific decade of the 90s and in this part, we will focus on a composer, Randy Newman who, in 1994, composed another iconic BSo and who, by the way, gives this selection its name. What movie are we referring to? Of course, «Maverick» is a remake of the famous series from the early 60s that, at the time, elevated the legendary James Garner. And after, this, Randy Newman along with his «Bugs», nominated for an Oscar in 1998, precipitates us to the end of our selection. And it is that we finished this, reaching the year 2004, with the award-winning composer of Disney, Alan Menken, finding his «Zafarrancho en el el rancho» by finishing this huge and excellent play-list.
What a great selection! As you can see, an hour and a half of great Western music. Absolutely nothing. And now, as I always tell you, all that remains is for you to enjoy it.
