Willam Kidd ,a famous pirate, was born in Green lock.Scotland in 1645. He moved to New York as a child and later became a privateer - a bounty hunter paid to capture pirates. In 1690 he was ordered by the governor of New York to capture notorious pirates and any French ships he came across. Soon Kidd ran into difficulty and turned to piracy himself, attacking convoys. Kidd's capture of the Quedagh Merchant on 30 January 1698 was considered his greatest prize. In 1699 he left the ship in the Caribbean to try to clear his name and made his way to New York. However, the governor handed him to the English authorities. He was hanged on 21 May 1701 at Execution Dock, Wapping
