Mysterious square structure spotted on Mars branded 'wild’ has space fanatics completely baffled
It even attracted the attention of Elon Musk
Brenna Cooper
The internet is once again going crazy with conspiracy theories after an image of a perfect 'square structure' was found on the surface of Mars.
So grab your tinfoil hats, as it's time to investigate further.
One of our closest planetary neighbours and likely the best contender to support human life in our solar system (after Earth, of course), Mars has long been a source of major fascination for humans.
Major Hollywood blockbusters have seen humanity colonise it, H.G. Wells made it the home of hostile invaders and Donald Trump has even promised to plant the US flag on it. There truly is no place like Mars.
Which is why any news or conspiracy theories about the planet instantly go viral.
The latest Mars news to capture our attention is the appearance of a mysterious square like structure discovered by NASA.
Classic Mars, always being a source of our paranormal fascination (Getty Stock Images)
Images of the grey, almost too perfect 'object' began to do the rounds several days ago on social media, with Joe Rogan even weighing in with the comment: "This is f**king WILD."
Naturally the appearance of a structure which appears to be 'man-made' would send the internet into overdrive, with believers quick to use the image as proof of a long-lost alien civilisation.
Meanwhile the logical (or non-believers, depending on which side of the argument you fall on) will brush it off as an over-exaggeration.
What do we know about the Mars square structure?
First of all, the structure is actually very real - having been captured by NASA's Mars Orbiter Camera back in 2001. You can find a link to the fully zoomed out segment here.
What is it? (NASA)
The image was taken from a tiny slice of a crator on the planet, with the square itself being found at the top.
So why are we all suddenly fascinated by the Mars square?
Now this isn't the first time we've been fascinated by a seemingly unnatural structure on the Red Planet, with internet sleuths claiming to have found everything from tunnels, faces and even Bigfoot knocking about in recent years.
This time it's the fact that many people are in disbelief that a near-perfect square shape could appear naturally and without the intervention of something (or someone).
But before you roll out the red carpet for aliens, it might be worth noting that straight lines aren't impossible in nature.
In fact, various replies to the original thread pointed out that natural wonders such as the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, the Eye of the Sahara and Turkey's 'Fairy Chimneys' could appear man-made to an alien visitor.
Regardless, the image has since come to the attention of resident Mars fanatic Elon Musk, who will no doubt be more than happy to send SpaceX there if he gets the chance.
He responded to Rogan's tweet: "We should send astronauts to Mars to investigate!"

Mysterious 'help' signs captured on Google Earth spark major concern online
Locals decided to investigate
Jess Battison
Usually, a wander around Google Earth will be to look at your uni mate’s house or to figure out what random bar you stumbled into the other night.
But one area has sparked major concern online as people have spotted mysterious ‘help’ signs.
An empty lot in downtown Los Angeles has gone viral after a screenshot was shared to X in recent days.
Google Earth images show the word ‘HELP’ repeatedly written in the dirt as well as ‘trafico’ and ‘LAPD’.
Racking up millions of views, conspiracy theories soon began over what was going down there as locals were quick to provide an explanation.
The words can be seen on Google Earth (Google Earth)
Despite there being huge concern on social media over the unsettling image, police haven’t been able to verify any crimes that could connect to the ‘help’ messages.
On Sunday (26 January) morning, a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) spokesperson said the force had responded to an ‘unknown trouble’ call near the 101 Freeway and Mission Road.
"Upon arrival, officers conducted a thorough investigation and found no evidence of any criminal activity or threat in the area," a statement to The LA Times explained. Officers also added that the messages spotted on Google Earth were from 2023 and that they had notified Union Pacific Railroad
However, local news station KTLA sent out a helicopter crew for its news report, finding the words were still on the ground on Monday (29 January).
So, as was a given with such a viral theory online, one person said they went over to the area where they found a number of homeless people.
X user ‘LAguy310’ spoke to people there and claimed: “OK so apparently Jose is writing all the HELP signs.” They claimed a homeless man had been writing these alarming messages in the dirt for many years.

And the official LAPD Central Division account responded, shutting down the conspiracy theories floating about.
“We’ve had several different contacts with the individual you speak of. He has refused housing or a mental health evaluation,” it wrote.
“There is no evidence of Human Trafficking. He has been at the location for a few years.”
Union Pacific also backed this up as a statement to LADbible explained: “A man trespassed on Union Pacific and other nearby properties to repeatedly create these misleading messages.
“We do know the individual that creates these, does so on neighbouring properties as well.”
The company also echoed that there was no evidence to suggest someone was in danger.
LADbible has contacted the LAPD for comment.

Lead Flat Earth conspiracy theorist shares 'evidence' one of the biggest events in human history was staged
Oh here we go again...
Brenna Cooper
A leading Flat Earther has argued that one of the biggest scientific achievements in human history was staged.
Flat Earth is the conspiracy theory that just refuses to die, regardless of how many astronauts blast off into space and photograph our home planet in all of her round, glorious beauty.
Forget science, forget photographic evidence; in the mind of a hardcore Flat Earther, we live on a floating frisbee where the ocean just cascades over the side like an interstellar waterfall.
One of the most prominent Flat Earthers is US content creator Mark Sargent.
Mark Sargent is one of the leading voices in the Flat Earth Movement (YouTube/MadThatPod)
As a man who is widely credited as popularising the modern Flat Earth movement, Sargent regularly shares his theories on YouTube, believes planets are just 'lights on the ceiling', and he even appeared in Netflix's 2018 documentary Behind the Curve.
Sargent's beliefs have since expanded beyond Flat Earth to include ideas that Bigfoot walks among us and that astronauts are Freemasons.
READ MORE PROFESSOR BRIAN COX GIVES 'SIMPLE FACT' TO SHUT DOWN FLAT EARTH THEORY IN BEST WAY POSSIBLE
In Sargent's view of space, the absence of conventional planets means the 1969 Moon landing wasn't possible, an argument which he outlines on Harry Robinson and Carl Reigler's MAD THAT series, a podcast which aims to 'interview the most exclusive guests and uncover the maddest stories'.
So, what does Sargent have to say about the Moon landings?
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story," Sargent said of the Apollo 11 mission.
In Sargent's view, this was filmed in a Hollywood studio (NASA/Newsmakers)
"You see what resonates with the public, you change a few details, and then the story becomes better."
Sargent then went on to claim that soft spacesuits depicted in TV and film aren't scientifically possible, which suggests to him the moon landings were faked.
"Tell me how a spacesuit works in a vacuum, tell me how it works," he said, going on to add that America capitalised on their post-WWII advantage to become the greatest showmen in the world.
Which isn't entirely wrong.
"The Americans... if there is a rumour or a lie that will make us look better, we won't hesitate," he said. "We absolutely will do it."
Sargent then went on to add that this line of thinking was what spearheaded the moon landings as a way to improve America's prestige.
"You don't realise what happened after World War Two, the rest of the world was smouldering," he said. "Everybody was picking up ashes except America.
"America was like 'Let's start inventing stuff'... and then somebody came up with the idea that's like 'You know what, let's say we went to the moon'."
Thankfully, due to the advancements in space technology, it won't be too long until the average person can head up into space and settle the debate once and for all.

People left shocked after spotting 'mysterious doorway' when looking at Antarctica on Google Maps
Social media sleuths have been trying to determine what the 'doorway' could be, but now the experts have weighed in
Olivia Burke
The last thing you'd expect to find in the middle of Antarctica is a mysterious 'entrance' plonked in the middle of a snowy mountainside, but in 2024, would you really be that surprised?
A browse on Google Maps can unearth all kind of oddities - such as a 'suspicious pit' in Canada, a huge pirate ship or creepy 'cartel members' getting in the Halloween spirit - however, this doorway seems to one of the most baffling yet.
A quick look on Google Maps can unearth all kind of oddities (Nikolas Kokovlis/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
A Reddit user posted their strange finding on a thread, explaining that they had spotted a 'massive door' in East Antarctica, while also sharing the coordinates 69°00’50"S 39°36’22"E so that people could take a look for themselves.
The only thing remotely close to it is the Japanese research outpost, Showa Station, but it's hardly a hub of activity out there - so of course, it didn't take long for the conspiracy theories to start pumping out.
One said: "Great find. Could be underground base entrance of some sort. Could be nothing. Excellent find either way."
Another person joked: "Just a blown off Boeing door."
A third added: "Bunker entrance? Subterranean entrance?"
The 'mysterious doorway' sparked a host of conspiracy theories (Google Maps)
While a fourth jibed: "That's actually Bigfoot's vacation home."
Others also suggested it could be somehow linked to a so-called secret bunker belonging to Adolf Hitler which was previously 'spotted' in Antarctica via Google Maps.
But to be quite frank, I'm really quite flabbergasted that nobody suggested it could have been something similar to the door which Mike Wazowski and Sulley got slung through when they were banished to the Himalayas in Monsters, Inc.
Educate yourselves, people - although they're on different continents, it still could have been a valid explanation.
But it turns out that the social media sleuths were all sadly wrong, as an expert has weighed in on the viral debate about the alleged doorway to debunk some of the speculation surrounding it.
Scientists say there is actually quite a simple explanation for what appears to be a frosty threshold turning up in the extremely remote location.
Professor Bethan Davies decided to one-up the Redditor who originally posted the 'doorway' by taking a more thorough look at the site via Google Earth Pro, which allowed her to analyse historic imagery of it.
Experts have now chimed in on the debate and sadly declared the 'entrance' has nothing to do with Mike and Sulley (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Professor of Glaciology at the University of Newcastle explained: "This feature is in an area of fast sea ice in East Antarctica, just offshore of the coast.
"There are a series of islands there and the water is pretty shallow. This is an iceberg that became grounded and is now stuck and melting out in situ. You can see many other icebergs in the area."
Her theory was supported by co-director of the Grantham Institute, Professor Martin Siegert, who went on to explain how the doorway-like structure might have formed.
"This is simply ice flow around a solid subglacial obstacle, influenced also by melting and re-freezing of ice and by katabatic winds," he said.
"The ice is quite thin here, as evidenced by other outcrops of rock nearby, so the influence of the bed on ice flow will be strong. It's an interesting pattern, but not unusual or surprising glaciologically."
A volcanologist at the University of Leicester, Professor John Smellie, also shared his thoughts on the strange discovery.
"It looks to me like a short rocky ridge outcrop has been exhumed due to a lowering of the ice," he said.
"It forms the 'top' of the 'doorway'. And there are two prominent parallel snow tails forming the sides of the 'doorway'.
"The snow tails show you the orientation of the predominant wind direction. So, with a good imagination, there is a weak and totally false door-like appearance overall."
Sadly for all the tinfoil hat wearers, Professor Smellie said he is pretty sure the supposed doorway is 'just a natural phenomenon' and 'nothing to get excited about'.
What a shame, eh?

Haunting moment ghost ship is spotted by sailors near the Bermuda Triangle
The dangers of the area where the sailors discovered the 'ghost ship' have been explained
Joshua Nair
The moment that two sailors spotted an abandoned vessel and boarded it in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle is quite haunting when you realise what has happened in the area over the past couple of centuries.
Also known as the 'Devil's Triangle', the conspiracy theories surrounding the Bermuda Triangle started on 5 December, 1945, when Flight 19 took off from Florida before disappearing.
The triangle's points are Bermuda (northern-most), Puerto Rico (southern-most) and the Florida coast, near Miami (western-most).
But what makes it so dangerous?
Well, Flight 19 went missing for starters, with no bodies or wreckage found and from 1945 to 2017, about 10 reported incidents have been reported of lost aircraft.
Add the maritime figures to that, with 14 ships vanishing from 1800 to 2015 in the same area, and it starts to look quite bizarre indeed, with several people blaming the disappearances on alien kidnapping, among other things.
However, Australian scientist Karl Kruszelnicki has gone against this notion, telling news.com.au that the number of planes going missing in the Triangle is the same as anywhere in the world 'on a percentage basis', according to Lloyds of London and the US coast guard.
Speaking of the harmful weather that can take the area over as a possible factor, Channel 5 documentary, Secrets of the Bermuda Triangle, also shared these opinions.
Nick Hutchings, a mineral prospector, revealed: “Bermuda’s basically a sea mountain - it’s an underwater volcano. 30 million years ago, it was sticking up above sea level. It has now eroded away and we’re left with the top of a volcano.
“We have a few core samples, which have magnetite in them. It’s the most magnetic naturally occurring material on Earth.”
They made an odd discovery at sea (Ocean Research Project/YouTube)
So basically, people get lost - but that doesn't make the area any less scary, as a pair of sailors found out.
The members of the Ocean Research Project were exploring the Atlantic Ocean, making a chilling discovery in the Bermuda Triangle in 2013, as they came across an unmanned ship without a running motor or upright sail.
There was no sign of anyone on board, so they climbed aboard to see if there may be anyone on the vessel that might need medical attention.
One of the members, Matt Rutherford, filmed as he stepped on board the 'ghost ship', confirming: "This is one awfully abandoned sailboat. Wolfhound from the Irish Yacht Club.
"I have no idea what's inside, I'm going to go and search around and I hope I don't find any dead bodies or anything crazy like that."
He admitted that he was scared to open any doors in case he found something haunting, but he was relieved to have found no dead bodies.
"This is absolutely crazy by the way. 800 miles from Bermuda, 1,500 miles from the US, standing on a very nice Swan 48, in the middle of the ocean," he said.
They found nothing and nobody onboard the abandoned ship (Ocean Research Project/YouTube)
Rutherford then managed to get in touch with the boat's owner, who offered him a reward if he could tow it back to Bermuda - and they tried to.
By their second day, they hauled the boat about 50 miles, as he added: "It's kinda funny, (towing a) 48ft boat with a 42ft boat. We're doing our best trying to get her to Bermuda."
But after 47 days at sea, they were running low of fuel, and despite managing to get some fuel from a passing freight ship, the abandoned vessel had to be cut from the tow line after getting wrapped around their rudder, which was at risk of breaking off.
Online investigators reckoned that the vessel belonged to a skipper from the Royal Irish Yacht Club named Alan McGettigan, who was travelling with three crewmates and needed to be rescued by a Greek cargo ship 64 miles north of Bermuda.
The Wolfhound vessel was left damaged by 20ft waves and 50-knot (57mph), and Alan made the decision to abandon his shit for their safety, before it was found by these two nine weeks on.
